Sorry for the delay in response!

Offhand I don't see any reason why the small index isn't working, my first
step would be to get the glimpse command out of the View Source of the
results screen, and try that on the command line.  

If that fails, check the settings used to build the archive - maybe the
correct settings were not used on glimpseindex?

If it works, then we have something of a mystery...maybe a timeout problem
in the browser.
