glimpseindex -a : a pretty simple question

Can glimpseindex -a take a file list (file containg list of filenames to be
added) argument or rather if I have a large number of non-wildcardable files to
be added do I have to do so via a shell command? Is this the best way to
regularly add 500 or so small files to an existing index of about 100,000 small
files (all email mesages)? The documentation seems to favor glimpseindex -a
over glimpseindex -f but I'm not sure. There are never any file deletions
involved and the new files to be added to the index are stored in the same
directory as the files already indexed.
