This is getting weirder and weirder. I regularly run the cron job on
my server with shared libraries, and it has been working without any
problems whatsoever for more than a year.

I'd like to try to reproduce this problem. Did you compile both
glimpse and glimpseindex for shared library support? What are the
contents of the crontab? And did cron send you some kind of failure
notifcationh? If yes, what are the contents of that message? Finally,
does the indexing with shared libaries work if you run it from the
command line, instead of cron?
