Size of Deny file on Alabanza server & syntax

BACKGROUND:
I couldn't find mention of this in the archives, or if it was there, I can't
tell for the syntax being out of my league. I am finding this a lot more
intense than installing and even modifying a simple Perl script ;o) I also
don't know the proper name of the file I am referring to as the "deny file"
...though I have the G/WG files in my directory tree, I can't tell what file
this is being pulled up in the control panel. I am on an Alabanza server.
Glimpse 4.1 and Webglimpse 1.6 are part of their standard options.
Everything is installed and configured automatically for you at the touch of
a button, so I do not know any of the specifics of what is standard
Glimpse/Webglimpse configuration and what was configured by Alabanza for
their automatic installation. I asked my host for help, who said "we do not
provide support for changing the default settings". The only thing we have
to do as an end user via the control panel is "Directory Administration" -
this brings up a file with entries such as

Deny \.gif$
Deny (^|/)wgindex\.html$
Deny \.glimpse_
Deny (^|/)wgreindex$
Deny (^|/)archive.cfg$
Deny (^|/)\.nh\.
Deny \?
Deny ~$
Deny /cgi-bin

There are about 40 or so lines in here already at installation. I have been
able to add other file types and folders following these 2 formats (as they
were pretty easy to figure out by looking - the host manual only mentioned
these 2, and actually has the extension one wrong.)
Deny \.extension$
Deny /folder

QUESTIONS:
This deny file seems have a limit at 75 lines. Is this changeable? How &
where? I have a pretty extensive sight...with 23 of these entries having to
do with G/WG files, that doesn't leave me enough lines.

Is it possible to use a single line to deny all image folders, no matter
where they appear on site? If so, what is the syntax? I don't understand
what all that ^|/ stuff means. Also, is there a wildcard character? My
forums have boardname.dat each having an equivalent boardname.txt files - I
would like to deny all forums/ *.dat files while leaving the .txt files
searchable - what's the syntax without having to list each one individually?

Many Thanks!

Jo
