The Makefile.linux works fine on RedHat 5.2, 6.x, SuSE 5.x, and
6.x. It is a little strange that it does not work on your system.

Are you per chance using RedHat 7.0? The kernel version 2.2.16-22
seems to indicate that. If yes, please be advised that RH 7.0 ships
with a severely broken compiler AND a binary-incompatible alpha
version of glibc. In other words, binaries compiled for Linux may NOT
work on RH 7 systems, and the compiler and libc may misbehave
anyway. In all honesty, RH 7.0 is not ready for production
environments, and above all, I would not use it on servers.

However, I heard that now RPMs for glibc-2.2 are available from
RedHat's site. You may want to try them. Don't forget to install the
glibc-devel RPM as well, or you won't be able to compile things. If
that does not work either, the only thing I can suggest is to
downgrade to RedHat 6.2. That distribution, at least, is rock-stable,
still officially supported, and above all, things work on it.
