Customizing Result Output / Mounting remote index dir

Question 1:

I am trying to have WG display results in the same format as our web site.
I have successfully modified the OutputTool.pm file, however when I tried to
modify it to a more complex page design, I get a 'Document Contained no data
error".
All HTML tags match.

I have read the online docs on Customizing Results Output, but I do not seem
to have CustomOutputTool.pm (I am not sure what version (commercial or not)
we have as we are a state agency and got it for free).  I have modified
wgoutput.cfg and replaced the wgoutput.cfg and .wgoutput.cfg files but still
get the same error.

Any ideas as to what I may be doing wrong?

Question 2:

I would like to use WG remotely so as to keep it off the web server.  I have
accomplished that by having it spider our web server remotely (Option T).
However, I do prefer how it indexes locally.  
I would like to try to use WG such that the directory that is being indexed
on the search server points to a remote directory on the web server (same
subnet).
This way I may be able to get the benefits of directory based indexing and
still have my search engine separated from the web server.
I would be very thankful for any tips.
