I don't know that egrep has a lib interface, but the other one I mentioned
- PCRE definitely does.  PCRE stands for Perl Compatible Regular
Expressions.  It's a library that provides an API for C programs to use
Pelr regexes.  The Perl regex engine is the most full-featured and one of
the fastest.

I bet it would be a big project to convert glimpse to PCRE, but the
potential benefits are large.
