Line number option & relative links
Dear wgusers,
I have a problem that I'm having a great deal of trouble solving:
If the line number option in the Webglimpse search box is turned on,
then clicking on one of the line numbers on the search results page
takes the viewer to a page in a "parallel universe" created by
glimpse. None of the relative links on this "virtual" page are correctly
referenced. This doesn't happen when the viewer clicks on a page
reference (as opposed to a line reference) of the search results
page. In this latter case, the viewer is taken to the real web page,
and all the relative links work fine.
My initial solution to this problem was to insert a line into the HEAD
section of some test pages, that line being "<base href="mybaseref">
". I then reindexed my site, and all relative links, whether a page
was accessed through a line-num link or a page link, worked fine.
However, I, and our Institute's editing staff, use Netscape Composer V
4.72 to edit and add content to pages on our web site. Composer has
the nasty and most frustrating habit of removing the base href line
everytime a page is opened in it. I've been trying to find a solution
to this problem for the last 4 days. I've also tried Adobe PageMill V
3.0 as an HTML editor, but am having difficulties specifying relative
links in that editor. I'd just give up on HTML editors altogether and
edit the HTML code directly, but the staff editors aren't willing to
go with that option.
So, my question is: is there any other solution to the relative link
problem (for pages accessed through line-number links) other than
adding a base href line to the HEAD section?
Any help anyone can give will be GREATLY appreciated. I'm totally out
of gas on this one.
Thanks,
Stephanie Fassnacht
