Possible Idiot Question
Hi All,
Let me start by saying that I'm not a programmer nor a UNIX guru; I am a
graphic designer who does a lot of HTML, so pardon my ignorance here. I am
in the process of installing glimpse and webglimpse to allow searching on
our web site (www.gps.caltech.edu). Glimpse is installed, and so is
WebGlimpse, and confarc has been run and moved/created all the requisite
files. However, I'm stuck at wgreindex. More specifically, I have whole
branch of the directory tree that I don't want indexed (the "user"
directories), so I tried to add a couple of "Deny" lines to .wgfilter-index
to accomplish this. However, no matter what I try, I still get dozens of
messages such as...
find: cannot follow symbolic link ./users/bachmann/la.dsp.jpg: No such file
or directory
I told .wgfilter-index to "Deny <^>\./users" and "Deny <^|/>users" and a
bunch of other similar "denies," but to no avail; I still get the "cannot
follow..." messages.
I think my biggest problem is that not having a background with UNIX and
grep, I don't really understand what all the "<^|/\.>" bits do, or how to
formulate a "deny" that will effectively cut off the indexing (and
searching) within the <web-site-root>/users directory. The man pages aren't
terribly helpful; they explain a few of the wildcards, but not all, nor do
they provide "real-world" examples.
Any ideas?
Idiot John
